I Want to Leave Wix. What Are My Options?

Leaving Wix is harder than it looks. Your site does not export. Here's an honest look at what your options actually are.

Leaving Wix is harder than people expect. Not because canceling is difficult, but because your site does not come with you when you go.

Wix does not let you export your site. Your content, layouts, and design exist on Wix’s servers in their own format. When you leave, you start over.

The portability problem

This is the most important thing to understand about Wix. You built your site there, but you do not own the files. Your text and images belong to you and you can copy them manually. The site structure, the design, and the page layouts are Wix’s.

Every platform you move to requires recreating what you have. That is real work, and it costs either time or money.

This does not mean Wix was the wrong choice when you started. For many businesses it was reasonable. But it is a fact to face now that you are thinking about leaving.

Your realistic options

WordPress. The most common destination for businesses leaving Wix. WordPress gives you more flexibility and more control, and you can export your files if you ever want to leave again. The trade-off is maintenance. WordPress sites require regular updates, security monitoring, and plugin management. You are trading one kind of problem for another.

Squarespace. Similar to Wix in some ways. No maintenance required. Better design templates. You still have to build your site from scratch, but the experience is straightforward and the results are consistently good.

Webflow. More powerful than Wix or Squarespace. Requires design skill or a budget for a designer. Not a realistic DIY option for most small business owners.

Work with a developer. Pay someone to build your site on a platform of your choice. Costs more upfront, but gives you the most control over the outcome.

What Basalt can do here

Basalt converts WordPress sites. If your site is on Wix, Basalt is not a direct option.

But here is what is worth knowing. If you are thinking about moving from Wix to WordPress, WordPress comes with its own maintenance burden. Once you get there, Basalt can move your WordPress site to a platform with nothing to hack and nothing to update.

If you are already planning to go to WordPress anyway, that is worth building into your plan.

The honest recommendation

Before you leave Wix, be clear on why you are leaving. If the issue is price, compare what rebuilding actually costs. If the issue is features, check whether what you need is available on Wix or a similar platform. If the issue is wanting your files back and owning your site, that is a valid reason to leave and it is best addressed sooner rather than later.

Whatever you decide, rebuilding takes time. Plan for it before you cancel your Wix account.
