What Is Schema Markup and Does Your Local Business Website Need It?
Schema markup labels your website for machines so they know exactly what your business is and what you offer. Here is what it is and why it matters now.
Schema markup is a standard label you add to your website that tells machines exactly what your business is, what you offer, and where you operate. Google and AI assistants both use it. Most local business websites do not have it, which means adding it is one of the clearest visibility advantages available to any small business right now.
What is schema markup, in plain terms?
When you look at a webpage, you see words and images. When a search engine or AI assistant looks at a webpage, it sees code. And most of that code does not explicitly say what it means.
Your homepage might contain the words “Johnson Plumbing, serving the north suburbs since 1994.” A human reading that knows it is a plumbing company in a specific area. A machine reading the page code has to infer that from context.
Schema markup removes the guesswork. It is a structured label you add to the page that says, in a format machines understand: “This is a plumbing business. The business name is Johnson Plumbing. The address is X. The phone number is Y. The service area includes these zip codes.”
No inference needed. The machine reads the label and knows.
Why does it matter for AI assistants specifically?
AI assistants handled billions of queries in 2025. When someone asks “who is a reliable plumber near me,” the system is scanning everything it knows about local plumbers in that area and deciding who to recommend.
Sites with clear schema markup get a cleaner signal into that system. Sites without it require the AI to piece together information from raw text, which is less reliable and less complete.
Sites with clean structure, fast load times, and clear schema markup get cited more often by AI assistants. Schema is the “clear structure” part of that equation.
What schema types does a local business actually need?
You do not need all of them. Start with the most impactful ones.
LocalBusiness. This is the foundation. It declares your business name, address, phone number, hours, and service area. If your business type has a more specific schema type available (Dentist, Plumber, AutoRepair, Restaurant, etc.), use that instead of the generic LocalBusiness label. More specific is more useful.
Service. For each major service you offer, a Service schema entry gives AI assistants a clear, labeled list to draw from. Not “we do it all.” Specific labeled services.
FAQPage. If you have a FAQ section on your site (and you should), marking it up with FAQPage schema tells search engines and AI assistants that these are real questions with real answers. Google sometimes displays these directly in search results. AI assistants use them to match your content to queries.
Review. Customer testimonials marked up with Review schema give the machine a structured view of your reputation, not just words on a page. Aggregate ratings especially.
Where do most WordPress sites fall short on schema?
WordPress does not include schema markup by default. Some SEO plugins (Yoast, Rank Math) add basic schema, but coverage is inconsistent. The output depends on how well the plugin is configured and whether your theme overrides any of its output.
Common gaps on WordPress sites: no service-specific schema, incomplete LocalBusiness data (missing service area, missing hours), no FAQPage markup even when an FAQ section exists, and Review schema that is either absent or formatted incorrectly.
The practical result: a site that looks fine to a human visitor but delivers an incomplete picture to the machines that determine whether to recommend it.
How does a well-built site handle this?
On a site built with AI visibility in mind, schema markup is automatic and complete. Every page delivers the correct labels without extra plugins or manual configuration. LocalBusiness data is consistent and complete. Service pages carry Service schema. FAQ sections carry FAQPage schema.
Nothing has to be bolted on after the fact because the structure was right from the start.

Quick answers
What is schema markup in plain English?
Schema markup is a label you add to your website that tells search engines and AI assistants exactly what your business is. Instead of guessing from your text, they read a structured tag that says 'this is a plumber, serving Denver, open Tuesday through Saturday.'
Does schema markup help with AI search?
Yes. AI assistants use schema markup to confirm what type of business you are, what services you offer, and where you operate. Sites with clear schema markup get indexed more reliably and cited more often.
What schema types does a local business need?
Start with LocalBusiness (or a more specific type like Dentist or Plumber), your NAP data (name, address, phone), and your service area. Adding FAQPage for your question sections and Review for customer testimonials adds more citation fuel.
Do WordPress sites have schema markup built in?
Most do not by default. Some SEO plugins like Yoast or Rank Math add basic schema, but coverage is inconsistent. The structured output depends on how well the plugin is configured and what theme you are using.
