WordPress vs. Wix vs. Squarespace: Which Is Right for a Small Service Business?

A direct comparison of the three most common website platforms for small businesses. Honest strengths and honest trade-offs for each.

These three platforms power most small business websites. All three work. All three have real limitations. The right choice depends on what you are starting with and what trade-offs you can live with.

WordPress: the most powerful option

WordPress is the most flexible of the three. It can be customized to do almost anything. It powers news sites, membership platforms, booking systems, and simple five-page business websites alike.

The trade-off is maintenance. WordPress requires regular updates to its core, themes, and plugins. Security vulnerabilities are discovered constantly. If you are not on top of it, your site is at risk.

WordPress also has a learning curve. Most small business owners either invest time to learn it or pay a developer for help.

On the plus side, you own your files. You can take them anywhere.

Wix: the easiest to start with

Wix is the most accessible of the three. The drag-and-drop editor makes building a site approachable for anyone. No technical knowledge required.

Wix handles hosting, security, and updates. Once your site is built, you do not manage any of that.

The main limitation is portability. Wix does not let you export your site. If you ever want to leave, you start over from scratch. That lock-in is a real trade-off to understand before you commit.

Wix has a free tier, which makes it low-risk to try.

Squarespace: the best design

Squarespace templates are the most polished of the three. The platform is designed for visual quality, and it shows.

Like Wix, Squarespace handles all maintenance for you. One flat price, no plugins, no security worries.

Building on Squarespace takes time. You start from a template and customize from there. The results are consistently good.

Content export is limited. You can get blog posts out but not your full site design.

The option for existing WordPress owners

If you already have a WordPress site, there is a fourth option. Basalt moves your existing WordPress site to a platform with nothing to hack and nothing to update.

You do not pick a new platform to build on. You keep what you have. The move is free.

This is only relevant if you already have a WordPress site worth keeping. If you are starting fresh, pick one of the three above.

How to choose

Starting fresh, want ease, and portability is not a priority: Wix.

Starting fresh and want the best-looking result: Squarespace.

Need maximum flexibility, can handle maintenance or pay for help: WordPress.

Already have a WordPress site and want the maintenance to stop: Look into Basalt.
