Why Is ChatGPT Not Recommending My Business?
Three reasons AI assistants skip your business: your site is not well-parsed, your information is inconsistent, or your content does not answer real questions.
ChatGPT and other AI assistants are probably not recommending your business for one of three reasons: your website is not being crawled or indexed effectively, your business information is inconsistent across the web, or your site does not directly answer the questions your customers are asking. Each of these is fixable. Here is how to identify which one applies to you and what to do about it.
Reason one: your site is not being crawled or indexed effectively
AI assistants handled billions of queries in 2025. Behind every local recommendation is a system that has crawled websites, read their content, and built up a picture of which businesses exist, what they do, and how reliable they appear to be.
If that system cannot crawl your site thoroughly, you are invisible to it.
Signs this is the problem:
- Your site loads slowly (test it at any free page speed tool)
- Your important content is inside images, slideshows, or videos rather than plain text
- Your pages have little readable text and a lot of visual design elements
- You have no schema markup labeling your business type and services
WordPress sites average 5 to 10 second load times on mobile. AI crawlers see the same slowness. Sites with clean structure, fast load times, and clear schema markup get cited more often by AI assistants.
What to fix: Speed up your site. Get important content into plain readable text. Add schema markup for your business type, services, and service area. Schema markup is explained fully here.
Reason two: your business information is inconsistent across the web
AI assistants do not rely on just your website. They check your Google Business Profile, map listings, industry directories, and other places your business appears online. They are looking for consistency. When the same name, address, and phone number appears the same way in multiple reliable places, the system’s confidence in recommending you rises.
When those details vary, confidence drops.
Signs this is the problem:
- Your business name is spelled slightly differently on different platforms (abbreviations, punctuation differences, “LLC” included sometimes and not others)
- Your address varies between listings (“St.” vs. “Street,” different suite number formatting)
- Your phone number is formatted differently across sources
- Your website URL is listed differently in some places
What to fix: Pick one canonical version of your business name, address, and phone. Go through every listing you can find and update each one to match exactly. Start with Google Business Profile, then Yelp, then any industry directories relevant to your category. Keep your website version identical to all of these.
This is tedious work with an outsized impact. Most businesses have not done it thoroughly, which means doing it gives you a clear signal advantage.
Reason three: your site does not directly answer the questions customers ask
AI assistants are designed to answer questions. When someone asks “who is the best electrician in my area,” the system is looking for a business whose website answers the questions that query implies: Do they serve this area? Are they reliable? What do they charge? Can they handle urgent calls?
A website full of slogans and stock photography answers none of those questions. A website built around real answers to real questions gives the AI system actual content to cite.
Signs this is the problem:
- Your homepage leads with a tagline but does not state your city or main service clearly in text
- You have no FAQ section or clearly headed question-and-answer content
- Your copy uses vague language like “quality solutions” instead of specific service names
- Your location, hours, and service area are not written out in plain text
What to fix: Rewrite your homepage to state plainly, in the first paragraph, what you do and where. Add a FAQ section with the questions your customers actually ask. Write answers to “what does it cost,” “what areas do you serve,” “what can I expect on the first visit,” and “do you offer emergency service.” Use the words your customers use, not trade jargon.

How to diagnose which problem applies to you
Start with a simple test. Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity and ask: “Who does [your service] in [your city]?” If you do not appear, note who does. Visit their websites. Are they faster than yours? Do they have clearer content? Is their information consistent everywhere?
Then run your own URL through a free page speed tool. Check your Google Business Profile for completeness. Read your own homepage as if you were a machine trying to understand what service this business provides and where.
Most businesses find all three problems exist to some degree. Fixing them in order, starting with the one most obviously broken, is the practical path.
Basalt moves small business websites off WordPress to a platform with nothing to hack and nothing to update. The move is free. Every site it produces is fast, clearly labeled with schema markup, and structured to answer the questions AI assistants are looking for.

Quick answers
How do I check if ChatGPT knows my business?
Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity and ask: 'Who does [your service] in [your city]?' If your business does not appear, that is your baseline. Note which competitors do appear and look at what their websites do differently.
Does ChatGPT use my Google Business Profile?
AI assistants pull from many sources, including publicly available business listings. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile is part of the picture. If your profile is incomplete or your information varies between your site and your profile, that inconsistency reduces the system's confidence.
How long does it take to start appearing in AI recommendations?
There is no fixed timeline. AI systems crawl the web continuously and update their indexes. Sites that make structural improvements can start seeing the effects in weeks. Consistency matters more than speed: the goal is to build reliable signals over time.
Do I need to submit my site to ChatGPT or other AI tools?
No submission process exists. AI assistants draw from web crawls, not from a directory you can join. The way in is being easily crawlable and clearly structured, so that when the crawlers visit, they get a complete picture.
